No Smoking Day: The Charity

 

With an expenditure of £26 for every life saved, No Smoking Day is the most cost-effective intervention campaign in the UK.

Run by the eponymous UK charity of four full-time staff and assisted by health-related governmental and voluntary sector organisations, the campaign targets smokers in novel and innovative ways. Its aim is to involve as many people as possible to encourage and assist smokers who want to give up, and to direct them to sources of help and advice.

A History of Commonwealth Day

 

The day has its roots in the 1800s and the time of the British Empire when many people of British origin who lived in the colonies wanted to celebrate their roots: the idea for Empire Day was first introduced by the author Clementina Trenholme in Ontario in 1898, and was celebrated on the Monday after 24th May – the birthday of the British monarch Queen Victoria; in some countries it became known as Victoria Day, and in parts of Canada and Scotland, Victoria Day is still a public holiday.

Celebrating St. David’s Day


The largest national parade in Wales is held in Cardiff and in the town of Colwyn Bay in north Wales, an annual procession takes place through the city centre with hundreds of citizens taking part; the City of Swansea hosts a St. David week-long festival, with a varied programme of sporting and cultural events whilst Welsh societies hold evenings of folk songs, Welsh dances and Welsh poems.
