He answers a classified ad entitled Departures, thinking it’s for a travel agency, only to discover that the job is actually for a “Nokanshi” or “encoffineer”: a funeral professional who prepares deceased bodies for burial and entry into the next life.

2010 sees the return of the region’s original 2day film-making challenge!

The challenge is open to teams and individuals; all you need is energy, enthusiasm and ideas. You will need to provide your own equipment to make your film; this could be your mobile phone, digital camera, or animation software.

‘Spirit of Place’ – Landscapes of the North West
An Exhibition of Fine Art Landscape Photography by John Eastwood

Entitled ‘Spirit of Place’ a new photographic exhibition at Castle Park Arts Centre in Frodsham, Cheshire, draws upon the richly evocative landscapes of the North West and seeks to portray something of the extraordinary in our natural environment. Fine art landscape photographer John Eastwood, has spent much of the last year putting together a new collection of his work that he hopes will convey not only a sense of the inspirational but also a sensitivity to the environment that surrounds us.

John Eastwood is a Fine Art Landscape Photographer from Stockport who specialises in revealed images from the landscapes of the North West – the natural images and scenes we chance upon in our everyday lives that evoke a sense of place and story. John is the official photographer of All Saints’ Church, Daresbury, Cheshire (the birthplace of Lewis Carroll) and he exhibits widely across the region in galleries, commercial exhibitions and County/Country Shows. His work has been published by the National Trust and he was recently commissioned by Halton Borough Council to design the Civic Christmas Card. His work has been featured and reproduced in a variety of books and magazines and his limited edition fine art prints are widely collected and much sought after.

By Andy Mckeown and collaborators

Shrewsbury based new media artist Andy McKeown will be literally colouring in the city and giving it some new temporary features.

See his and his collaborators unique take on the city’s architecture as they take to the streets using Andy’s REPLAY software after dark to highjack buildings and transform their appearance using light projections.

Accompanying Andy is local illustrator David Setter (Compulsive Art) who, using his quick drawing skills and imagination will create new features across our city’s landscape. If you find them they will also let you join in!

Andy McKeown’s current practice involves the interpretation of text, sound, image, and numeric data as real-time colour and pattern systems that are realised as projected light installations. Many of his installations rely on direct audience nteraction to produce instant udience created unti and moving images.

David Setter aka Compulsive Scribbler is an illustrator who lives and breaths illustrating.

By Ross Dalziel and young people from Arena Housing’s Foyer Federation

Herding:
The act of bringing individual animals together into a group, maintaining the group and moving the group from place to place—or any combination of those.

Herding is a guided walk developed by sound artist Ross Dalziel with young people from Bridge Foyer in Chester.

It will take participants on a journey inspired by the local area of St Mary’s on the Hill, including the River Dee.

Along the way there is reference to Nigel Kneale’s The Stone Tape (Directed by Peter Sasdy 1972), pastoralism, online gaming & multiboxing.

The piece explores how we experience & move through public/private, networked/real and past/present space.

Bring your mp3 player or borrow one of our head sets and let the work guide you to hear the city as you never have before.

Changes

By artist Sam Meech, Upton Heath Primary and Dorin Park Special Educational Needs schools

Over the course of 10 workshop sessions, 24 pupils from Chester’s Upton Heath Primary and Dorin Park Special Educational Needs schools took part in a collaborative learning and inclusion project with Chester Performs, Manchester Camerata and Drake Music.

Using music, assistive music technology, dance and film, participants worked with a team of artists to create a performance.

Inspired by the project, digital media artist Sam Meech has created two new pieces of work especially for Screen Deva.

Making Changes:
This short film offers an insiders view of the project, including interviews with the participants, artists and footage taken during the workshops and the end performance.

Bells/Sweep/Trails:
Audiences are invited to try out some of the interactive elements used during the project to create the end performance.

Get into gear and join the Manchester to Liverpool bike ride in aid of the NSPCC

Calling on people across the region! Final preparations are underway for the NSPCC’s Manchester to Liverpool 39 mile bike ride on Sunday 30 May 2010 and there are still places available so get involved and join the fun!

The bike ride will begin on Sunday 30 May 2010 from between 8am to 10am at Salford Watersports Centre at the Quays where riders will follow a flat, mostly traffic free route through Manchester via Old Trafford and Stretford, and join the Trans-Pennine Trail, riding approximately 39 miles through to Otterspool Park in Liverpool.

Tickets for the ride are priced at £15 per person. For more information and your fundraising pack and to book your place on the ride please visit www.bike-events.com or contact Amanda Gilmour, corporate fundraising manager at the NSPCC on 0161 628 1221.

If you live in Liverpool, a coach service will run once in the morning from Liverpool to Manchester, leaving at 7am, to take riders to the start and then at intervals throughout the afternoon to take riders back to Manchester after the ride. Booking is recommended to guarantee a seat and the cost is £22 for one rider and a bike.

See the water return once more to this majestic setting…

Through projection installations the Vales will re-animate the Water Tower and “bring back” the water that surrounded it over 700 years ago.

On the exterior of the building waves will crash up the sides of the walls once more; walk inside the building and you will be submerged beneath water.

Using projections, your voice will create ripples on the surface in this eery and unique installation.

Rob and Matt are brothers who collaborate on film installation and lighting projects. They create visually inventive and memorable artworks that are site specific.

Don’t miss this spectacular intervention of the historical landscape of the city.

Private Views Made Public

Artist Patricia MacKinnon-Day has created a stunning multiple screen installation that invites viewers to share a unique viewpoint and moments of contemplation as they look out across six spectacular landscapes along mid-Cheshire’s Sandstone Ridge that roll through night and day, season through season.

MacKinnon-Day has been working with six local people who ‘own’ spectacular private panoramic views of the six historical hillforts overlooking Helsby, Woodhouse, Eddisbury, Kelsborrow, Beeston and Maiden Castle and negotiated with them to access and make these secret places public.

Created using time lapse cinematography, these short films remind us of the enduring nature of these ethereal, mysterious ancient monument sites, that date back to the Iron Age.

MacKinnon-Day is an artist living in Chester, who has exhibited widely both nationally and internationally, and has been commissioned to create significant and ambitious contemporary art works.

She approaches her work with the spirit of investigation, teasing out the clues, to past and present human activity.

The performance is about longing, affairs, unsent letters and war; it explores the boundary between desire and revolution.

There will be an aftershow talk after the performance

Lena Simic is a performance artist, born in Dubrovnik, Croatia and is now based in Liverpool. She has toured nationally and internationally, including Denmark, Cuba, Croatia and venues throughout the UK.

The Globe is a new nightclub that has reopened in Chester its a lovely venue to host a Party . The club is situated alongside the canal in the Steam Mill building . The club is all on the ground floor and has a smoking area alongside the buiding .

Disabled facilities are available .

There is an entrance charge of £3.00

Dress code smart but casual .

You can bring friends or come alone and I will introduce you to some of the other guest

The story revolves around a bet on a rugby league match.

Our hero, Arthur, drawn into the situation by some hilariously macho nonsense, has to coach a team chosen by Reg, coach of local top dogs The Cobbler’s Arms.

Naturally Reg chooses a team that has experienced less success than most of England’s national sports teams..combined: Reg chooses The Wheatsheaf Arms.

The story follows Arthur’s attempts to kick this ragged bunch of misfits into some kind of shape. It’s clearly going to be a difficult task. Anybody who has played amateur sport will probably be cringing inwardly at these scenes.
Training for The Wheatsheaf Arms consists of little more than trading banter in the changing room and exercising their arms lifting pints in the pub.

These are the kind of set-pieces that explain why John Godber is so good at what he does. You can’t help but laugh at the comedy, but at the same time you’re aware it’s also functioning as social comment.
As training goes from bad worse, Arthur enlists the help of fitness guru, Hazel, which certainly helps to inspire the players to greater heights, or at least turn up for training.

As the big game against The Cobbler’s Arms draws ever closer the team are transformed into a lean, mean, rugby league playing team who fear nobody. The big day arrives for Arthur and his team and the match is recreated brilliantly on stage.
