How can Turning Point help you?
Turning Point is the leading social care organisation in the UK.
They provide invaluable services in the care of people suffering from alcohol and drug misuse, people who have problems with mental health and support people with disabilities in learning.
Turning Point was originally founded in 1964 by a man called Barry Richards and was called Helping Hand. Helping hand was established to help people suffering from alcohol abuse in Camberwell, London and expanded its service to help drug users in 1969.
Over the last forty five years Turning Point has developed throughout the UK, progressing from helping a few people to now supporting over 100,000 citizens in need every year.
Turning Point not only provides support and assistance for those suffering from alcohol/drug problems, mental or social health problems but also opens up its services to those who experience the anguish, distress or difficulties associated with caring for a sufferer.
Turning Point is proud to run a ‘Person Centred Approach’ which allows them to focus not just on the individual that needs their help but also on the environment and culture in which they have been brought up and now live in. Workers at Turning Point recognise that it is often personal circumstances which leads people into their resulting alcohol or drug misuse and makes a huge effort to individualize each case that comes through their doors.
Services at Turning Point for all their clients can include full support in getting back into society, finding employment suitable for them, assisting them to meet their housing needs, ensuring that they get the help they need to maintain their health as well as offering advice and direction for those with problems of debt.
After launching Connected Care in around 2004 Turning Point recognises that many of the people they deal with have been failed by health and social services already in place. Turning Point also, with the aid of research, understands that many individuals who are experiencing mental and/or social health problems do not feel comfortable presenting themselves to these services.
In reaction to this Turning Point work with people to integrate with facilities available and also encourage communities to develop their own local delivery of care.
You can help support Turning Point by getting involved in one of their many charity fund-raising events across the UK, or by offering to volunteer at one their centres.
