Jodrell Bank Observatory

Jodrell Bank is a huge complex that is a part of the University of Manchester, and is a centre specifically created for the observation of the stars and planets of the universe. Although the centre is geared towards the final frontier of space it also has an earthly feel with its nature experience.

The Jodrell Bank consists of the world famous Lovell Radio Telescope, a 3D theatre that takes you on a tour around outer space, a planetarium (currently closed for redevelopment) and axhibitions and events amongst other brilliant things to see.

The centre is a great place to find out all about the observation of space and a place where you can retreat into the wonderful Granada Arboretum, where you can see a huge (35 acres) collection of 2000 species of trees and shrubs.

Bernard Lovell (Jodrell Bank - University of Manchester)History of Jodrell Bank

Jodrell Bank was made into an observation post for the famous Bernard Lovell when he came to Manchester University in 1945. Jodrell Bank was already in use as a botanical station, and being situated out of the city provided a quiet location to watch the stars.

In the first five years between the years of 1945 to 1950, Lovell made the first observations of meteors and during this time a 218 foot telescope was built.

In the mid fifties the huge Mk 1 Lovell Telescope was constructed, this telescope being 250 feet in size.

By the mid 1960s, a Mk 2 Telescope was added to the Jodrell Banks centre and in 1970 the Mk 1 Telescope received an upgrade.

From the 1970s further additions were added to the centre and was eventually opened as a visitor centre, with the aim to educate people on the observations of space.
