The Groves at the River Dee – Chester, Cheshire UK – Bandstand Performances 2009

Chester Bandstand by monkeymyshkin at FlickrThe Groves is a beautiful area of Chester to visit and certainly during the summer months the community makes the most of the River Dee; using it for lots of annual events and charity fundraising days.

The Groves became the riverside promenade from as early as the 18th century and now covers a much larger area along the side of the River Dee.

Charles Croughton took the lease on the area in 1726 choosing to plant an avenue of trees as well as making the river bank far more secure.

During the 1700′s the area took its name, the Groves. With the development of the Chester city walls structure and the addition of the ‘Recorder’s Steps’ the Groves and the walls became joined together.

It is thought that the Groves may have been the main area of the port of Chester with the stone for the original fortress being extracted from quarries here in Roman times.
