The Chester Rows by chelmsfordblue at FlickrThe Chester Rows are one of the most photographs sights in the historic city of Chester. The Rows are a unique collection of individual houses and can be found in the city centre with some great examples on Eastgate, Bridge Street and Watergate Street.

Each house is of a ‘half-timber’ design and appears to most as a shining example of the Tudor age.

However, construction of The Rows began as early as the 13th century as street level retail units. Steps led to the gallery walkways above and to the retailers living accommodation.

Later into the Tudor and Jacobean periods the top levels were built outwards over the bottom level and supported only by long poles. Retailers were innovative and used the poles as an extra facility to display their wares to the passers-by.

You can read more about The Rows at ChesterWalls.Info; which is a fantastic website with some of the best articles, information and stunning pictures of Chester UK.

‘Roam the Rows’

This summer Chester Performs will be hosting their ‘Roam the Rows’ festival throughout August.

Previously responsible for the wonderful ‘Screen Deva’ held in May  which was a massively successful event with over 20 events over the space of only 8 days, Chester Performs develops the experience and availability to audiences and performers of performing arts throughout the city of Chester.

‘Roam the Rows’ is a free festival which takes place on the famous Watergate Street and within the Rows and is a fantastic sight for all visitors to Chester city centre to experience.

Performances will take place between 11.30am and 3pm on each Sunday throughout August:

9th, 16th, 23rd and 30th; and on Saturday 29th August.

‘Roam the Rows’ sees a mixture of dance, character artists, street performers and intriguing art installations. You can explore just some of the highlights here.
