Beeston Castle History
Beeston Castle was built under the orders of the 6th Earl of Chester, Ranulf, and dates back as far as AD1225. Ranulf died before he got the chance to see his wonderful castle completed.
Ranulf chose to design Beeston Castle following his time on crusade in Syria with the resulting structure developing in a Saracen style.
Before Beeston Castle was constructed the site had been used as a fortress during the Bronze Age.
Beeston Castle was taken by King Henry III in AD1237 and used as a prison and a base for his troops.
King Henry’s son King Edward I also used Beeston Castle during his reign; making further fortifications to the castle.
Beeston Castle was finally destroyed at the end of the Civil War after being used as a royalist stronghold.
‘The Castle of the Rock’
Beeston Castle is an awe-inspiring Cheshire castle to visit and an exploration of their ‘Castle of the Rock’ exhibition will reveal more about the history of this once magnificent fortress.
Beeston Castle Well
Within the inner bailey of Beeston Castle is a deep well over 300 feet deep. It is rumoured that there may be hidden gold treasure in one of the passages leading from the well hidden there by Richard II.
